Initially called Tropical Charms, the Charms Candy Company was started in 1912 by Walter W. Reid Jr. The name was inspired by the individually wrapped square-shaped hard candies, which were among the first to be individually wrapped in cellophane.

Aside from the Blow Pop, the candy company also made Charms Squares, cotton candy, and a variety of smaller candies.
