The history of American Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving celebrations are as American as the 4th of July. There’s nothing like gathering your friends and family around the Thanksgiving turkey, eating mac and cheese and pumpkin pie while washing the food down with tasty eggnog. But do you know the origins of this fantastic celebration? Keep reading to learn more.

What Is The Real History Of Thanksgiving?

Over 400 years ago, in 1620, there was a group of colonists from Plymouth, England landed in the northeast of modern-day USA. Most colonists were forced to remain onboard the ship during those first brutal months, suffering from exposure, scurvy, and contagious illnesses. An Abenaki Native American and a Pawtuxet taught the Pilgrims, who were weak from malnutrition and sickness, how to cultivate corn, gather sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. After the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest was successful in November 1621, Governor William Bradford organized a feast and invited the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit, and therefore celebrating the first American thanksgiving.
