Why You Should Eat What You Want!

Did you know that May 11th is National Eat What You Want Day? Nope, neither did we! But, as a business that thrives on our love of food we are all for this holiday. Of course there should be a day to celebrate eating whatever you want! If you want to know more, stick around while we tell you where this food-lovin’ holiday came from and why we think you should eat what you want every day of the year!

What is Eat What You Want day?

Alongside ‘Don’t Step on a Bee Day’ and ‘Blah Blah Blah Day’, this holiday is one of the 80+ created by fun-loving duo, Thomas and Ruth Roy. It was initially created as an attempt to get away from all the diets and fads that are constantly thrown at us by the media. May 11th is now an entire day dedicated to eating whatever you want, without feeling guilty!

Eat What You Want Day is a day to “help people break away from the frustrating health and diet trends of our times, if for only one day, and just let go and enjoy life a little.”

What does this mean?

Well, in theory it is a great idea! We all deserve to treat ourselves! And this is a fantastic way to enjoy eating whatever you truly want to.

But, by allowing yourself to eat what you want on one day of the year, doesn’t that imply that on every other day you aren’t eating what you want? Not only does that make most of your days really miserable, it is also a pretty unhealthy way of thinking! Life is too short to eat food you don’t want to eat!

Why is this a problem?

To start with, this way of thinking can actually enforce what this holiday was created to dismantle. By ‘allowing’ yourself one ‘cheat day’ a year, you are enabling the idea that normally you should be restricting yourself. Regardless of why you are dieting, this can have a negative effect on both your mental and physical health if done improperly.

What should you do instead?

Well, instead of eating what you want on only one day of the year, do it every day! Instead of only wanting food deemed as ‘unhealthy’, we should want it all! The healthiest food to eat is a good balance of everything after all.

But that being said, we’re not saying diets are bad. It’s not really about changing what you are eating, but about changing your mindset towards certain foods. If you want to eat more vegetables or less sodium, for example, then you should want to do that on every day – including Eat What You Want Day!

Basically, what we’re trying to say, is that all food is good food. You should be treating yourself to a healthy balance of foods that are just right for you every day! Of course, make the most of this holiday. It’s the perfect excuse to treat yourself to your favourite American chocolate for example. But try not to restrict your favourite treats the rest of the year.

And, most of all, do what is right for you! You know yourself better than anyone, and if you have any concerns about your own mental or physical health, always consult with a health professional.
